THE WHALE SAID "THANK YOU"

If you read a recent front page story of the SF Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.

A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate ) and radioed an environmental group for help.

Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her.

They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.

When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles.

She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around; she was thanking them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.

The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were
following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

This is the year to find happiness and confidence simply because we CHOOSE it... even if our outer world shows no evidence for us to feel happiness or confidence.

I believe that this is the year where the inner game creates the miracles of accomplishment, love, and happiness.

And, like the whale, may you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you.

Sasha, thank you for sharing this beautiful story with us. It gives me hope for humanity overall. Jan is a time to reflect on last year and plan for a better new year. Personally I have a renewed faith in life and my fellow humans this year. I am filled with a renewed sense of purpose that brightens up each day.

Now for an interesting tidbit to make this an even more remarkable story. East of the Farallon islands is an area know to have the female Great White sharks that come in from various locations. Most divers (without a shark cage) will not dive in that area because of how many sharks are in the waters there. Lucky for these divers it was past the season that the Great Whites come around. The females are much larger then the males which tend to hang out on the other side of the Farallons. I just finished reading a book called "Devil's Teeth" (referring to the outline of the North Farallone islands) by Susan Casey. It changed how I think about all this and for me adds to the whale story.
