Marley and Me

On Christmas Day, the film version of the popular book “Marley & Me” will be released nationwide. I caution dog owners that, while the film promises to faithfully capture the sweet spirit and message of the book, its subject—Marley, a wildly out-of-control-but-lovable yellow Labrador retriever—will raise questions (and some hackles) about what the dog’s owners could have done to better understand their pet and to correct his many behavioral problems.

Labs are intelligent dogs and need to be… Continue

The Rain

Since the rains have come I thought I would remind all you dog owners out there to remember your dogs may react to the rain in a way that is not exactly what you want.

I get a ton of calls when the rain starts from folks who cannot understand why suddenly their dogs are doing their business inside. No it is not because they are angry at you! it's just that they hate getting wet. Some dogs react to just getting their pads wet. They will prance around like they are walking on hot coals! Silly I k… Continue

Tips for Bringing Home a Shelter Dog

“Dogs need order and leadership. They are pack animals, so you must be the ‘pack leader’ to ensure that your dog knows that you’re the leader. Dog owners may not know the temperament of their shelter dog, but they can make the transition from shelter to home easier, faster and more rewarding by having a set of house rules.

The following tips can help ensure a smooth transition.

Before You Bring Your New Dog Home
Hold a family meeting to create rules about caring for the dog. Will she be… Continue

Halloween Tips for your dogs

Tame Halloween Fright
Safety Tips for Families with Dogs

By Gail Chadbourne

Keep dogs safe during Halloween—the most dangerous holiday for dogs—with tips from Bark Busters, the world’s largest dog training company.

Halloween brings a fun time for most of us. Lots of great costumes with little monsters and ghastly ghouls at every turn, yet, for some of our smaller participants, a few unwelcome thrills and chills. And this is just the kids! For some of our much-loved four-legged family members,… Continue

I don't like the idea of a shock collar either! He is pretty good as long as someone is there with him, so my parents agreed that when I bring my daughter for them to watch, that they will watch the dog too. They have a house dog, Max, a little beagle. So not only will he have people but also another dog. We are going to try that out first and see how it goes!

How do you feel about training with a shock collar? How do you feel about dogs living outside in a dog house and being tied up? I am very busy and got a dog dumped in my lap - I don't have the heart to give him up, but it is hard for me to spend a lot of time with him!

Thank for the holiday cheer.
I actually listened to Marley and Me while on the plane to New Zealand. I thought this a was a fantastic story and he 2 dogs I have both have a little "marley" in them. And like Marley my eldest is coming to the end of his adventure with us and it will be just as hard for us as it was for Marley's family.

I think that Bad Rap brought some of Vic's dogs to Dog Town. Yes, they are all overwhelmed with homeless and problematic babies. So, it is up to us to keep raising the bar on responsibiliity, education, spending money for their wellbeing and care, commitment, and just plain common sense!

Hugs To Gail. Hope to see you soon.

Hello Gail...

It will be interesting to see how Marley And Me creates spin offs in the pet lover world.

Have you ever seen Dog Town. This is the organization out in Utah that rehabilitated the 22 pit bull dogs saved from the Michael Vic nightmare. I want to work there except they are in Utah :(

In the mean time, here is my New Year message for you!

I think one cat would like to take a walk; he's very adventurous. I did have the other cat on a lead when she was very little because I wasn't sure if she would run away when she went outside. She didn't try so I stopped using the harness and lead. Thanks for your rapid response.

Hi Gail, Hello! I love pets and have two cats, or should I say, they have me. Can cats be trained at an older age to walk on a leash? Thanks!
Best,
